Part-Time Instructor Coach

The 32BJ Training Fund is seeking qualified candidates for a part-time Instructor Coach for the Washington DC area.

About Us: SEIU 32BJ is a service union that represents cleaners, maintenance workers, service staff, and security officers in the New York City area and nine other states on the East Coast. Our mission is to educate every member so that they have the tools they need to meet the challenges of a changing industry.

The person in this position will work with instructors in our training sites in the Washington DC area (Maryland, Virginia, DC).

Summary: Under the supervision of the Manager of Instructor Development, the Instructor Coach observes, supports, and coaches Training Fund instructors to help them provide effective student-centered instruction to members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Build strong relationships with instructors, site managers, and Training Fund staff that fosters trust, collaboration and professional growth.
  • Support the development of instructors” understanding of the curriculum and student-centered instruction through formal and informal observations that provides feedback for professional growth.
  • Create and observation schedule at the beginning of each term, in coordination with the site manager and Manager, Instructor Development.
  • Travel to and between training sites, primarily on weekends, to conduct observations, informal classroom visits, and/or coaching sessions.
  • Communicate with instructors before scheduled observations and conduct a debrief session afterward.
  • Complete and submit evaluation reports according to Training Fund process.
  • Participate in meetings and/or conference calls with Instructor Development staff to review recent observations and develop professional development activities.
  • Provide support for the annual Welcome Back conference by engaging in the planning and delivery of workshops, meetings, and activities of the event.
  • Attend scheduled observer training sessions throughout the academic year and during the summer.
  • Participate or lead special projects as needed.

Qualifications and Core Competencies:

Experience in one or more of the following:
  • teaching/instruction or training/development
  • observation and feedback
  • work in adult education
  • Bachelor”s degree required; TESOL certification (or similar) preferred
  • certified BEST Plus test administrator (preferred)

Skills in the following:
  • excellent organizational skills
  • effective communication and presentation skills
  • ability to manage an independent schedule and meet deadlines
  • excellent computer skills
  • Spanish proficiency (preferred)

Other duties:
  • Identify professional development for individual and/or groups of instructors based on observational data.
  • Deliver workshops to instructors and provide instructional coaching based on individual need.
  • Communicate with the Manager for Instructor Development and/or the Professional Development Coordinator to plan and deliver workshops, identify resources to support professional growth for individual instructors, and create Instructor Development Plans.
  • Periodically assess language proficiency of ESL students using the adopted standardized testing instrument (currently BEST Plus 2.0)

Compensation:
  • Starting wage is $50 per hour
