Level 1: Monday and Wednesday from 9 am to 12 pm
Level 2: Monday and Wednesday from 12 pm to 3 pm,
Level 3: Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm
Instructional hours: 18
Flexible prep/admin hours: 9 (Note, if you are only able to teach one or two of our three classes, we”d still love to meet you)
Type: Part-Time (27 hours)
Pay: Hourly, $37/hour
Location: Fully onsite, Lower East Side
Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Program Overview:
This position is part of Henry Street Settlement”s Education and Employment Services, a $10M division providing a continuum of services from early childhood education through adult workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Our employment programs are derived from proven models to provide holistic employment, education, and financial counseling services to low-income New Yorkers. The ESOL Program includes classes in ESOL Basics, ESOL Job Readiness, Citizenship Preparation, ESOL Literacy, and ESOL Civics.
As an instructor in our ESOL Civics program, you will work with beginner, high-beginner, and low-intermediate-level participants to develop English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and to help students explore ways to participate more fully in civic affairs and social life of their communities. ESOL Civics skills will include knowing one”s rights, self-advocacy, and preserving important aspects of one”s culture and identity. Our 3 in-person classes began in September and each has 20+ enthusiastic students from many countries eager to learn.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor”s Degree and TESOL certification required
- Demonstrated experience in a culturally responsive, multi-level, and diverse classroom
- Ability to engage, build relationships, and demonstrate empathy with adult learners
- Belief that multilingualism is a benefit for the classroom and community
- Strong organizational, creativity, multi-tasking, and follow-through skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to be resourceful, efficient, and flexible
- Ability to support and accommodate learning differences as needed
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Suite, and email
- BEST Plus Test certified (highly desirable)
Responsibilities:
- Warmly welcome and acclimate new students into the classroom to allow ongoing enrollment
- Design and teach ESOL civics classes for beginner, high-beginner, and intermediate English Language Learners
- Integrate English reading, writing, listening, and speaking practice into all class sessions
- Include level-appropriate civics topics in all lesson plans
- Research and source materials appropriate for adult English Language Learners
- Implement differentiated instruction to provide appropriate support for all learners
- Connect and build relationships with community resources
- Coordinate enrichment activities, including field trips, guest speakers, and volunteer events
- Collaborate with the case manager to learn more about participants' needs
- Track the progress of participants” efforts and write monthly teacher notes
- Participate in various contractual, program, division, and agency meetings and activities
- Attend DYCD training and represent the Henry Street Settlement
- Respect and maintain shared space with other Henry Street Settlement programs
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
