Description
The Student Support Specialist - ESL will serve as advisor for students studying in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program. This position will assist students with enrolling in classes, connect them to support resources, and support them in connecting to other training programs available at Mayland. Candidates for this position should be bilingual (English and Spanish) and should have strong communication skills. Candidates should also be comfortable working with students with differing skill levels, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences.
Schedule: Varies (part-time, weekdays)

Minimum Qualifications

Primary Duties
Communicates with current and potential students via phone, email, text, or other official avenues
- Helps conduct enrollment sessions for new students
- Attends local community recruitment events to represent the ESL program
- Assists adult learners in planning for their future careers and connects them with support resources
- Supports students in navigating the process of enrolling in further training opportunities
- Discusses and helps set appropriate goals with each student (academic, employment, community)
- Maintains accurate records and related paperwork to be submitted to the office in a punctual manner
- Sustains positive, professional relationships and communication with students as well as college and prison staff
- Communicates effectively with the administrative team in person, through email, and by telephone
- Participates in staff development sessions, trainings, and other college functions as appropriate
- No outside class duties required
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum associate”s degree required
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software (email, web browser)
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Considerable discretion in the handling of confidential information and sensitive materials
