Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The job duties and responsibilities expected of this position include but are not limited to the following:

• Teach academic ESL courses to students whose goals may include obtaining an Associate degree, university transfer, and/or a certificate
• Teach on-ground and online ESL courses
• Collaborate with fellow ESL faculty to expand and update current courses and develop new courses in ESL, including SLO and PLO revisions
• Serve as an ESL course level coordinator
• Serve as faculty lead for the Culture and Language Exchange program and/or other ESL department projects
• Collaborate with other ESL faculty members to design, evaluate, and implement course materials and classroom assessment strategies that enhance student success and persistence toward achieving academic/career goals
• Collaborate with ESL faculty on program review reports
• Maintain office hours during each semester
• Serve on faculty hiring and evaluation committees
• Participate in campus-wide shared governance activities, such as serving on the Academic Senate and/or its committees and the Santa Monica College Faculty Association
• Participate in the continued development of instructional support strategies, including tutoring and early alert (GPS system)
• Actively participate in relevant professional development opportunities, including ESL department meetings and Flex Day
• Commitment to evidence-based (scientific) instructional practices
• Commitment to equitable instructional methods

Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must meet the minimum qualifications of an English as a Second Language (ESL) faculty discipline at the college. • Possess a Master's degree from an accredited institution in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis

• OR Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language
• OR the equivalent

• Must have evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population, including students for whom English is not their first language, first generation college students, and students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in teaching academic ESL writing, reading, speaking, and listening to both resident and international students in a community college or university, especially advanced writing courses or transfer-level English courses
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience using effective ESL pedagogy in a credit ESL classroom
• Experience in developing curriculum and assessment materials including SLOs
• Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction, computer-assisted language learning, and familiarity with online platforms
• Experience in teaching abroad and/or studying a foreign language abroad
• Familiarity with noncredit ESL programs
• Participation in professional organizations, such as CATESOL and TESOL

Pay Philosophy

Starting salaries for Full-Time Faculty are based on a combination of experience (step) and educational (group) achievement. Initial placement is within the starting salary range and a minimum of step 5 within the applicable group. Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.

This advertised salary range is based on the contracted regular semesters (Fall and Spring). Intersessions (Winter and/or Summer), additional teaching load, and/or substitute teaching may result in increased earning potential.
