Job description

Summary

The ESL faculty member maintains a classroom environment that facilitates the teaching and learning of English Language Development. The University of the Potomac offers ESL courses for students to acquire English skills.

Knowledge and Competencies
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of the subject area of discipline that they teach
  • Substantial professional experience in teaching ESL or any related field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of resources, students' needs, curriculum, content, and pedagogy
  • Must be collaborative and willing to work with fellow faculty on any required work such as curriculum development and planning
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver instruction in accordance with the learning objectives set for the course (beginner to pre-college level for grammar and writing; reading and vocabulary; listening and speaking), including practical skills, methods, theories, and techniques
  • Also provide instruction in conversational English, and ideas and customs in English to students with limited English proficiency
  • Develop and manage student assessments, course syllabus, and lesson plans
  • Plan and deliver daily effective differentiated instruction
  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers to plan and execute core content lessons that meet academic standards while developing language proficiency for English learners
  • Use data to analyze the academic and linguistic needs of students for instructional purposes
  • Establish instructional outcomes
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport; establish a culture of learning
  • Engage students in learning with quality questioning and discussion techniques
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness
  • Use student data to inform instruction and integrate differentiated instruction
  • Reflect on teaching by accepting on going informal feedback and implement changes based on that feedback
  • Maintains records including testing, daily work, attendance and general record keeping
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Attend quarterly meetings

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Two (2) years of relevant teaching experience preferred
  • Minimum of 9 undergraduate or graduate-level credits in English/ESOL or related field; or linguistics
  • Full-time or part-time teaching experience in an ESL program at the secondary or post-secondary level which may include graduate teaching assistant experience
