English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher

Position Purpose
Assume responsibility for the instructional program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The ESL Teacher must be familiar with and demonstrate understanding of the Virginia ESL standards and expectations and the 2020 WIDA Standards. The ESL teacher is expected to communicate effectively with teachers and staff regarding specific EL students and assist in the development of classroom lesson plans, activities, and programming that will ensure that WIDA Standards are effectively demonstrated. These models of programming ensure that an EL student will make progress in learning English and attain English proficiency, while meeting the state”s academic content standards. The EL Teacher must have ability to learn procedures to report information, maintain records, and prepare reports.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with teachers, administrators, and staff to demonstrate use of the WIDA Standards;
  • Work within the classroom to assist in the development of lesson plans and activities that utilize the WIDA Standards;
  • Work with small groups of students within and outside the classroom to support language development;
  • Assist in maintaining student records;
  • Maintain appropriate contact with parents, administrators, and instructional tutors;
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, copying, collating, etc.

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Plans and prepares for classroom instruction of EL students;
  • Provides a positive classroom environment that promotes student learning;
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies to meet varied student needs;
  • Complies with state laws, school board policies, and administrative regulations;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed for an orderly, productive classroom and school;
  • Encourages the productive citizenship and respectful conduct of students;
  • Monitors and assesses student progress;
  • Identifies resources and personnel to meet the needs of individual students;
  • Maintains accurate, complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation;
  • Informs parents regarding student progress, the instructional program, and other school issues;
  • Demonstrates positive school-community relations;
  • Works cooperatively with colleagues, support staff, and administration;
  • Engages in professional growth activities and demonstrates professionalism;
  • Identifies needed resources and materials for classroom instruction;
  • Contributes to the total school program;
  • Adapts and modifies curricula and instruction as required to meet student educational needs;
  • Conducts individual student assessments;
  • Serves as a learning consultant to school colleagues;
  • Works with Central Office staff to plan and conduct professional development for regular education staff and EL tutors.
  • Researches and reports on developments in the field of ESL education;
  • Serves as a member of Child Study, Eligibility, and IEP Committees, as needed;
  • Performs other duties and related tasks as assigned by building administrator

Travel Requirements:
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Qualifications Profile:

Certification/License
Virginia Teaching license with an endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

Education
Bachelor”s Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
Master”s Degree preferred

Experience
Successful prior teaching experience required.
