Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION To teach students how to speak, listen, read and write in English and how to comprehend spoken English for those students who speak a foreign language (i.e. Spanish, French, Japanese, etc) REPORTS TO Principal COLLABORATES WITH Grade Teams, Content Specific Department, Department Chairs, Social Workers, Special Education Coordinator, College and Career Counselors, Special Education Teachers, and Director of Student Support Services DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS •A valid NYS teaching certificate in ESL •Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred •At least 1-year prior teaching experience in special education •Demonstrated success working in non-traditional and/or urban school settings •Excellent oral and written communication skills •Experience with educational technology (SMART Board, student laptops, etc.) •Willingness to learn and grow professionally RESPONSIBILITIES •Develop a curriculum that takes an overall approach to English study or they may focus on a specific aspect of language use, such as life skills, literacy, or vocational and workplace English. •Teaching students basic English skills, such as listening, reading, writing and speaking. •Classroom work will include but not limited to: orote pronunciation techniques oquizzes otextbook use ovideos and computer lessons. oreal-life interactions involving language use in different situations, such as shopping, schooling, etc. SKILLS AND ABILITIES •Work relentlessly to close the achievement gap •Use data to inform instruction •Set high professional goals •Respectfully challenge ideas and the status quo •Maintain a positive mindset •Focus on converging core content and student need to increase knowledge •Develop supportive and caring relationships with students, parents, and colleagues •Communicate professionally •Be responsible to self, team, and school •Assume team membership and individual leadership •Adhere to deadlines
