ESL TEACHER
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Teachers will plan and deliver meaningful learning experiences, create opportunities for maximum educational and social development, and work with all members of the school community to create a nurturing and structured environment for each student enrolled at New Heights Academy Charter School.

New Heights is a product of and exists to serve the students of Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem. We opened in 2006 as the very first charter school in our district. Since our opening, we have grown to serve 750 students in grades 5-12 and achieved an average annual graduation rate that exceeds the rest of the city. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement curriculum and create performance tasks aligned to the Common Core Standards;
- Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards;
- Use interim assessment data to enhance curriculum and inform instructional practices;
- Participate in professional learning communities, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions;
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues;
- Have extensive content knowledge including how to differentiate and level questioning.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program.
- Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for pupils from a wide range achievement levels.
- Effectively assess the instructional and educational needs of pupils, and design, develop, and implement sound instructional and educational programs.
- Provide a motivating and stimulating learning environment.
- Perform research and development activities pertaining to curriculum and instructional programs.
- Follow safety procedures and written and verbal instructions.
- Make independent decisions.
- Organize tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks.
- Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting.
- Focus on converging core content and student need to increase knowledge.
- Develop supportive and caring relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A valid NYS teaching certificate.
- Bachelor”s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- At least 2 years prior teaching experience.
- Demonstrated success working in non-traditional and/or urban school settings.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with educational technology (SMART Board, student laptops, etc.).
- Willingness to learn and grow professionally.
