LSC - Columbia Office - Columbia, SC $20.67 - $23.08 Hourly
ESL Teacher
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher will work with New Americans Program (NAP) staff to identify clients in need of English Language Training (ELT) and will prepare for and provide English language classes to limited English proficiency (LEP) clients. The ESL teacher will work closely with the Refugee Services Coordinator and Resettlement Director to develop and maintain ELT curriculum that assists refugee and immigrant clients in learning English upon their arrival in the U.S
Essential Functions:
1. Follow all Lutheran Services Carolinas policies and procedures.
2. Develop and maintain ELT curriculum focused on clients with lower-level English proficiency.
3. Prepare activities and assignments for clients participating in ELT classes.
4. Teach lower-level ELT classes to primarily newly arrived refugees and immigrants participating in LSC NAP programs.
5. Monitor and test for client ELT progress and success.
6. Assist clients with online ELT applications, learning, and accountability.
7. Work with case management and employment specialist staff to recruit clients for ELT classes, ensuring consistent levels of attendance.
8. Document and report client attendance and progress according to contractual requirements and in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
9. Assume other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor”s degree or higher in related field. TESOL or TEFL Certification required.
Experience: Working with refugees/asylees/immigrants in a social service environment preferred. Prior experience (professional or volunteer) teaching English as a Second Language required.
Specific skills/abilities: Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook). Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Sensitive to issues facing survivors of trauma and the needs of low income and culturally diverse clients.
Specialized knowledge, licenses, etc.: Fluency in an applicable second language preferred (Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Russian, Ukrainian). Knowledge of education best practices desired
