JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. ESH”s Workforce Development programs align with our mission by providing high quality youth and adult programs and services within the community.

The Community and Workforce Division works in tandem to provide youth and adult education services to the Mott Haven Community. We serve the Mott Haven Community participants yearly with GED preparation classes, Post-Secondary Pathways (PSP), and Workforce Development Services. In addition to that, case management and wrap-around services, workforce development programming, and regular community workshops and events.

The Adult Literacy Program (ALE) Instructor plans and implements instruction to participants enrolled in the Youth and Adult Education/GED program, which offers Literacy and math, Pre-GED, GED, and ESL courses. The instructor is responsible for the planning and delivery of quality instruction, assessment, and student progress in ALE/ESL courses. These courses are designed to be responsive to the needs and expectations of the diverse community and participants we serve.

Our goal is to apply the primary-person approach in helping participants plan for their career and learning goals. Responsibilities include teaching, developing, and implementing digital curriculums, conducting intake, and administering tests. These services will complement and directly feed into workforce development and career advancement services provided throughout the organization.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide high-quality instruction to youth and adult literacy education program participants employing research-based instructional strategies and best practices including differentiated instruction.
  • Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
  • Plan, design, and deliver instruction to meet the needs of each participant.
  • Assess learning, monitor progress and provide feedback and support via individualized instructional plans for participants.
  • Engage peers and colleagues in regular communication with the intent of fostering open dialogue and healthy exchange of ideas via interdisciplinary team meetings to promote effective instructional program goals.
  • Conduct formative and summative participant assessments.
  • Maintain all required student records and complete all reporting requirements.
  • Attend required professional training, cross-departmental meetings, case conferences, workshops and events.
  • Implement and expand ESL materials for pre-HSE and HSE prep, incorporating participants” relevant interests and learning needs.
  • Be willing to become licensed in the area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify participants.
  • Participate in collaborative efforts towards achieving goals as set forth in the Years 1-3 Performance-Based Milestones Chart (subject to change)
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours training provided by RAEN (Regional Adult Education Network)

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor”s degree in education or a related field.
  • Two years teaching experience (Secondary Education or Adult Education).
  • Ability to form strong relationships with youth and adult participants.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Flexible, ability to work under pressure, and highly motivated to build successful outcomes.
  • Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs.
  • Language skills in Spanish.


Required Clearances
  • COVID- 19 Vaccine - As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date.

Supervisory Responsibility

The role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Expected Work Schedule

This role is a Part-Time Position (15 hours/week). Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH's needs.

Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Travel

Minimal expected for this position, within the ESH network of programs/sites.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to successfully perform this job's essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role is generally a sedentary role; however, some sorting/filing is required. Requirements include the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
