Description
English as a Second Language (ESL) Manager
Inspiritus is designated by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to administer the Alabama state refugee resettlement program and serve as the State Refugee Coordinator (SRC) office, also known as the Alabama Office for Refugees (AOR). The English as a Second Language (ESL) Manager will be responsible for designing and implementing a successful ESL program for refugee and immigrant newcomers across the state of Alabama. The ESL Manager will work in partnership with local and statewide program staff in planning, coordinating, and managing effective delivery of in person and online English language classes. This position, with support of the State Refugee Coordinator, will be responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and successful operations of ESL program activities. They will ensure that all documentation is complete and accurate, including enrollment data, attendance records, and assessments. They will monitor collaboration and teamwork among program staff as well as recruit and supervise qualified ESL instructors. They will ensure that the goals and objectives of the ESL program are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and within budget.

- Reports to the Alabama State Refugee Coordinator
- Located in Birmingham, AL
- Mostly Virtual/Remote with some on-site required, Travel (0 - 25%)
- Monday through Friday; 8:30AM - 5:00PM
- Annual Compensation: $50,000 - $60,000
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates the successful operation of the ESL program.
- Maintain positive relationships with Refugee & Immigrant Services program staff and key community partners
- Train and mentor ESL instructors in classroom management and curriculum implementation.
- Play the lead role in incorporating adult learning principles, updating, and adapting curricula for ESL classes based on client needs.
- Ensure that programming and curriculum is linguistically and culturally appropriate for diverse refugee populations and maintain a classroom environment that is welcoming to all students.
- Provide ongoing support and instruction to ESL program staff. Provide classroom instruction as needed when ESL instructors are out of the office.
- Develop and administer student evaluation tools.
- Maintain referral process and communication with refugee services program staff to ensure students are enrolled in a timely manner.
- Conducts recruitment activities to identify eligible refugees and immigrants that are a good fit for the ESL program.
- Organizes and coordinates the programs” activities in compliance with all contract and regulatory requirements.
- Work with Community Engagement team to develop and maintain volunteer support for ESL programming.
- Ensures all documentation and classroom materials are accurately prepared for clients by program staff.
- Ensures that all services provided are properly documented and meet or exceed contract standards and guidelines.
- Oversees reports and proposals to funders and any other data to ensure they are complete, accurate, and up to date.
- Helps ensure the coordination and integration of services. Coordinates program activities with related activities within the department and in other departments to ensure efficiency and economy.
- Coordinates with the Community Engagement Specialist to recruit and manage volunteers to provide career mentoring to 50% of RYCP participants.
- Assists staff with issues or grievances that may arise with clients, the community, etc.
- Helps respond to monitoring and audit reports and implements required changes.
- Assists in securing funding for current and new programs.
- Participates in INSPIRITUS functions and public relations activities.
- Participates in training and professional conferences to keep abreast of current trends.
- Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
- Performs other duties as assigned to meet program needs.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Master”s degree in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a minimum of two years of experience teaching ESL or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience teaching ESL to diverse populations, preferably refugees and/or immigrants
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Experience working in a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to balance the needs of the client and the employer
- Conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change
- Must have the ability to communicate with all persons in a culturally competent manner.
- Must be sensitive to the service population”s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
- Ability to set limits and maintain the helping role of the practitioner
- Excellent computer skills, accurate typing, and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Must own a personal multi-passenger vehicle, hold a valid Driver”s license, have a good driving record, and have appropriate personal auto insurance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supervising diverse staff and/or volunteers
- Experience teaching English abroad
- Familiarity with major Savannah, community resources, public transportation, and neighborhoods
- Experience with human services programs
- Reads, writes, and speaks a relevant foreign language
