English/ESL Teacher - IJLA COMPANY DESCRIPTION Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy (IJLA) is an Options school that feels like home for the 120 Latino youth we serve from Pilsen and the surrounding community. IJLA is a second-chance high school designed to serve students between the ages of 16-21 who are seeking a more personalized and individualized program. We provide students with an interdisciplinary, project-based academic program while simultaneously providing strong social and emotional support. Our educational philosophy is rooted in social justice and focuses on rebuilding students” perspectives of learning to navigate life in a meaningful and purposeful way. We invigorate hope and restore students” hearts and minds to reclaim their education, graduate, and transform into agents of change. POSITION DESCRIPTION The English/ESL Teacher coordinates English and ESL instruction, curriculum development, interdisciplinary planning, and classroom management for a load of four courses. The position is responsible for developing school-wide, department, and unit competencies in the curriculum for students. The focus of the position”s work is team intensive with the commitment to use communication protocols specific to IJLA. The teacher is also responsible for instructing an advisory group of about 16-20 students, called a Familia, where schoolwide policies and social-emotional competencies will be used for assessment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Helping students understand and communicate regarding ESL
  • Encouraging students to practice vocabulary and assisting them in developing listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills in both languages
  • Applying techniques such as role-playing, dialogue, language games, literature, film, and other formal exercises used in teaching foreign languages
  • Teaching grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary, and composition
  • Guiding students in conversational language
  • Creating lesson plans and planning classroom activities to motivate students
  • Preparing visual aids, grading homework and exams, coaching students individually and in groups, and communicating with parents and other teachers about student progress
  • Teaching English to students whose native and primary language is not English
  • Developing ways to ensure every student he/she teaches learns how to speak and write English proficiently
  • ELPT duties which include but are not limited to WIDA screenings and ACCESS testing
  • Maintenance of EL folders and documentation
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor”s degree in Education or another related field
  • At least two years of relevant work experience
  • Professional Educator License
  • ESL Endorsement
  • Demonstrated passion for working with young people
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice in policy, instructional delivery, and content
  • Strong relationship-building skills with youth via Familias (advisory), restorative justice practices, classroom community protocols, clubs, and courses.
  • Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people
  • Ability to work both as a team player and independently with minimal supervision
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills
  • Above average “customer” service attitude
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Strong telephone skills and ability to maintain composure under pressure.

  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail, and effective management of multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, and manage conflict and disputes
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the internet

The position requires availability for extended hours; non-traditional hours may also be required to perform job duties.
