ESL Paraprofessional

Under general supervision, performs a variety of instructional, technical, and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher. Employee may perform a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the teacher, meet the needs of LEP students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for LEP students. Employee provides one-on-one assistance with linguistic, academics, and socio-cultural needs and may lead small group activities. Employee will support ELs in ESL and content area classrooms. Employee assists ESL teacher with general clerical duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In ESL Classes:

Provides supplemental instruction to ELs under the direction of an ESL teacher. Assists with classroom activities. Works with students one-on-one as students' needs dictate. Creates activities and documents under the direction of the ESL teacher.

In Content Classes:
  • Pushes into content-area classrooms to support English learners with classroom materials and activities.
  • Ensures ELs have needed supplies. Documents and reports back to ESL teacher.
  • Collaborates with the content teacher to help create review materials, study guides, adapted assessments, and projects.
  • Assists students with reinforcement of material both in-class and at Resource.
  • Reads assessments aloud to students in small-group settings.
  • Checks for assignment completion.
  • Tutors students one-on-one as needed.
  • Assists teacher in supporting cultural adaptations for LEP students.
  • Facilitates respect for students from diverse cultures.
  • Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students, assists students with becoming increasingly independent in the use of the English language.
  • Monitors student behavior (including social-emotional) in the classroom. Documents for the ESL teacher.
  • Facilitates orientation of new English learners, including how to use the cafeteria, location of restrooms, nurse's office and other critical locations including the counseling and main offices. Helps students with lockers and transportation when they first arrive and until comfortable navigating alone.

IN GENERAL:

Will assist ESL teacher with clerical duties including making photocopies, maintaining files, and assisting with newsletters and parent mailings.
