ABOUT Somali National University (SNU)

Established in 1954 and nationally accredited in 1969, Somali National University (SNU) is the largest university in Somalia and one of the oldest in East Africa. It offers a wide range of degree programs, including agriculture, chemistry, medicine, engineering, and geology. SNU is a thriving university with 15 faculties, over 16,000 students, and five campuses across Somalia.

The newly established English Language Institute (ELI) at SNU provides high-standard English training to help students enhance their communication skills, crucial for academic and career achievements. The ELI is seeking a Director of Studies to lead its English language program developed with the support of educational consultancy Ednastics.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in English, TESOL or a related field and Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in TESOL (Masters preferred).

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 3 years of experience in adult ELT w/ at least 1 year of supervisory experience. Ability to work empathetically with language learners, understanding their challenges. Capable of developing a curriculum that meets the needs of Somali students. Very high level of digital literacy required. Strong team-building skills, positive attitude, regard for others, and a good sense of humor.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative: Oversee the day-to-day management of the ELI, coordinate with other departments, and prepare reports for SNU leadership. Supervisory: Assist with staff recruitment, oversee instructors, hold staff meetings, and provide feedback on lesson plans. Planning and development: Lead curriculum development, program evaluation, and marketing efforts to ensure program growth and effectiveness. WORKING CONDITIONS

Full Time: 40 hours per week (20 classroom hours and 20 office hours including admin tasks, PD, student support, marking, and prep time) COMPENSATION

Competitive salary depending on qualifications and experience. Includes room and board with home internet and transportation to and from work. 4 weeks’ holiday time per year and round-trip flight to home city per year of contract.
