- The Bilingual Counselor is responsible for counseling and guidance services which assist ELL students in making maximum use of their abilities by providing social, behavioral and academic group and individual counseling.
Reports To:
- Reporting to the Director of English Language Learner Instruction
Scope of Responsibility:
- Develops and provides lessons to groups of ELLs regarding all aspects of school policy including discipline policy, dress code, U.S. grading system, social mores, etc.
- Provides psycho-social assessment for the identification of ELL's needs and provides written reports within the required timelines.
- Provides individual and group counseling.
- Structures a referral line to assist ELL students addressing cognitive and developmental problems, family issues, or psychosocial issues.
- Addresses the needs of students in crisis in schools other than based school (if based at one or two schools);
- Organizes and conducts in-service training with school personnel and parents.
- Discusses future high school requirements, training programs, and career plans with ELL's students and parents.
- Identifies possible drop outs and designs unique programs for dropout prevention.
- Assists with the assimilation and acculturation of ELLs and their parents.
- Recruits students for summer academic programs.
- Evaluates transcripts, translates transcripts and checks for completeness to be sent to high schools, State Department or other schools.
- Works a flexible schedule at the assigned school site; has the ability to perform family visits, as needed, and respond to parents after school hours.
- Serves as a consultant to members of the administrative and teaching staff. ? Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or Director of ELL.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Exhibits proficient oral and written communication skills in English and the target language.
- 3+ years of progressively increasing counseling experience with a Master's Degree in School Counseling.

- Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture- creator that can inspire and motivate.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
- High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
- Collaborative management style, with a proven track record of working with diverse individuals at all levels to drive decision-making and results.
Physical Involvement:
- Sitting is required most of each work day.
- Must be able to operate office equipment.
- Standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required.
- Ability to provide own transportation to schools, work locations, and meeting sites.
- Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations, including locations not on the ground floor.
