Position Summary
The English Language Learning (ELL) Instructional Specialist is responsible for developing the ELL curriculum, delivering high-quality instruction for both ELL academic and community-based classes, supporting ELL adjunct faculty members, providing guidance to current and prospective students, collaborating with community partners, ensuring compliance of instructional programs with equity and accessibility standards, and performing other duties as assigned.
This position reports to an Assistant Director or Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
CURRICULUM: Review and revise the existing ELL curriculum, as required. Develop contextualized, workplace-based ELL curriculum in key industries such as healthcare, information technology, and construction. Make recommendations for student and instructor materials. Develop online and hybrid courses through AACC's learning management system, Canvas. Contribute to program assessment strategies and outcomes measurement.
INSTRUCTION: Provide instruction in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English Basic Skills (EBS), and/or Teaching ESOL certificate classes in reading, writing, grammar, listening, and speaking in face-to-face, online and/or hybrid formats as scheduled by the department.
ADJUNCT FACULTY: Participate in adjunct faculty interview panels. Mentor and observe adjunct faculty. Participate in faculty meetings and provide professional development opportunities on topics related to ELL instruction. Act as a subject matter expert for adjunct faculty on all ELL curriculum and instruction issues. Participate in training and professional learning opportunities required for Department of Labor grant-funded Instructional Specialists and share pertinent information with colleagues.
STUDENT PATHWAY PLANNING: Foster collaboration with community and internal college partners to increase academic pathways for multilingual students from ELL classes to credit degrees, certificates, and workforce training programs. Share information with prospective ELL students regarding assessment processes, course placement, and eligibility for various departmental programs.
COMPLIANCE: Collaborate with the staff team to implement best practices for equitable and accessible programs, courses, and assessments. Participate in regular program and course review processes to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with grant requirements and Learning Outcome Assessment standards. Provide input for grant applications and reports.
COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP: Attends monthly English Language Learning Adult Education (ELL & AE) department meetings as well as college-wide committees representing ELL & AE and CEWD
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Responsibilities include remaining current on best practices in EL instruction, student access and inclusion, and research trends.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, Director, Assistant Dean, and/or Dean.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or completion of a specialized certification program requires one year or more of coursework beyond an undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., TESOL, Adult Education, etc.).
Minimum of three years experience providing English language acquisition instruction to adult learners with varying degrees of language proficiency
Minimum of three years experience developing curriculum for use in varied modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, asynchronous); experience using Canvas or another LMS for design and instruction
Minimum of two years observing and providing mentorship/feedback to other instructors
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse, multi-cultural populations and effectively and tactfully with students, instructors, staff, community representatives, government agencies, and the public.
Strong technology skills, including knowledge of MS Office and databases. Experience with data collection and preparing reports
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual - Fluency in both English/Spanish (written/spoken)
Experience working in a community college environment
Experience designing contextualized curriculum (i.e., English for specific purposes, workforce development)
Active participation in national and/or regional TESOL associations/affinity groups
This position requires working in a fast-paced setting, handling multiple complex tasks simultaneously.
