Reports to: Adult Center Coordinator/Student Services Director Date: 05/31/2024 POSITION SUMMARY

Adult ESL teacher works part-time in a classroom setting two days per week providing instruction in the areas of
listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary acquisition, plan and implement lessons based on
class syllabus and program curriculum, assists with program registration and assessment. Maintains monthly reports
and student records, appropriate strategies used to help ESL learners at each of the six developmental levels within
the program.

Part-time hourly position. This is a grant funded position

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English as a Second Language (ESL), and of
the concepts, principles and methodologies of ESL instruction.

2. Working knowledge of current learning theory and recent research in ESL.

3. Working skill in the use of Microsoft Office, Internet/email, and technology to deliver Distance Education
instruction.

4. Ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students' learning.

5. Ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments; to communicate effectively, orally and in
writing.

6. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, interpersonal relationships and planning.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Teachers should have considerable experience, preferably in an adult environment. A minimum of a bachelor's
degree in education or related field is required. MA ESL/TESOL preferred or BA/BS with experience teaching in ESL.
Most teachers are expected to achieve VAECP (Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program) certification within 5

years of employment. Instructors are required to maintain BEST PLUS, Goal Setting Policy, and Assessment Policy
certifications as mandated by the VDOE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Instructs students in English emphasizing the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, writing grammar and
vocabulary acquisition

2. Communicates regularly with the regional specialist/program manager in order to optimize effectiveness of
services

3. Create detailed and contextualized, sequential lesson plans and semester syllabus

4. Attend mandatory staff meetings and a minimum of two staff development/yearly to keep abreast of recent
developments in education and to show evidence of continuing professional growth.

5. Recruit, register, administer pre and post-tests, and provide orientation to students.

6. Evaluate each student's progress on an ongoing basis and share the information with the student.

7. Keep essential records necessary for the efficient operation of the program.

8. Conduct and incorporate goal-setting into classroom lessons and review goals monthly

9. Service students individually, in small groups, and to supervise students in non-classroom time (field trips)

10. Guide learning activities of each student and provide learning situations suitable for each student in an
atmosphere that encourages learning

11. Become informed about and to comply with the policies and regulations of the school division and of the
program.

12. Serve as a public relations agent for the program and the school system

13. Make follow-up phone class and send postcards to absent students

14. Perform administrative duties and other duties assigned within required time frames
