Summary
The English Language Institute (ELI), a department in the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), seeks highly-qualified, experienced instructors of English for Academic Purposes to teach classroom communication skills and/or provide pronunciation practice sessions in ELI 994, a three-week intensive teaching preparation course for international teaching assistants -- called Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) at the University of Michigan. Offered jointly by the English Language Institute and the U-M Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), ELI 994 prepares new graduate students who completed their undergraduate education in a language other than English to serve as GSIs in disciplines throughout LSA. The number of positions available is subject to enrollment. This appointment opportunity is subject to final approval by the academic unit.
Program dates: July 17 -August 6, 2024. Mandatory pre-term meeting on July 15, 2024.
Effort: 15% & 40% summer half-term appointments are available
Teaching Schedule: Varies according to appointment and enrollment but averages 12-13 hours/week for three weeks for 40% appointments and 4-6 hours per week for 15% appointments.

Responsibilities
ELI instructors plan and deliver high-quality instruction in language and pedagogy in accordance with ELI 994's curricular guidelines and best practices in EAP instruction. Assignments involve leading communications skills classes and practice teaching sessions for pre-service international Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs). ELI instructors are expected to provide students with regular, timely feedback on all assignments.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a closely related field
- At least two years experience teaching English for Academic Purposes at the college/university level in the U.S.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Desired Qualifications
- Experience teaching English pronunciation
- Experience teaching EAP and/or ESP at the (post-)graduate level
- Familiarity with the U-M Graduate Student Instructor (International Teaching Assistant) teaching context
