The Program of Adult Literacy Services (PALS) provides non-credit students with educational and workforce training opportunities. Primarily we offer English-language acquisition (ESL/ELL), high school completion preparation such as GED preparation courses and the National External Diploma Program (NEDP), and short-term career training programs.
Duties
Student workers in the Program of Adult Literacy Services (PALS) assist staff in a variety of office tasks, and they provide exceptional customer service to all students, staff, and visitors.
1) Front desk coverage: covering phones and office email, providing general program information, assisting students in scheduling intake assessment appointments
2) Office tasks: filing paperwork, making copies, answering incoming calls, returning messages, making calls to students, organizing and distributing paperwork, entering class information and attendance into spreadsheets and other documents.
3) Intake and Assessment support: welcoming students to appointments and assisting the Intake Specialist by collecting intake information, walking students to and from Academic Testing Center, providing office support if working during evening appointments
4) Other tasks: completing on-campus errands; creating a welcoming, positive presence while treating all with courtesy and respect; assisting in planning and execution of workshops, year-end recognition ceremony, and other events.
Special skills needed
Expertise in Excel spreadsheets (filtering and sorting) and database use (entering demographic information, looking up and editing records) is strongly preferred. Graphic design intuition is appreciated. Ability to understand and manage online file storage using OneDrive and network drives is strongly preferred. Ability to navigate websites with online calendars and forms. Attention to detail is a MUST.
Other skills preferred: ability to maintain high level of confidentiality in conducting office assignments; excellent customer service and phone manners; organization and time management; ability to work independently with a positive attitude.
The ability to communicate verbally in Spanish is an asset for success in this position; written Spanish abilities for emails and texts are welcome, and other bilingual skills are greatly appreciated and encouraged.
Additional information
PALS student workers must be outgoing, friendly, mature, and articulate. The PALS office has student worker hours available Monday-Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, as well as seasonal evening work (4:30-7:30 pm) depending on office need. Shifts are usually scheduled in four-hour increments. Preference given to students who will be attending HCC more than a single semester.
MUST BE A CURRENT HCC STUDENT FOR THE SUMMER AND/OR FALL 2024 SEMESTER.
MUST BE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST 6 CREDITS.
UNLESS FIRST-SEMESTER STUDENT, MUST HAVE ATTAINED A 2.0 SEMESTER GPA DURING THE LAST SEMESTER ATTENDED.
