JOB GOALS:
The English Language Development (ELD) Teacher provides specialized English as a Second Language instruction in designated schools and classrooms to English Learners (EL) for the purposes of developing their ability to effectively perform in English and acquire the English language. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of assigned students. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.

JOB GOALS:

Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of assigned students. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- MA DESE Licensure: Teacher, English as a Second Language, PreK-6 & 5-12
- Successful experience teaching students with a wide range of abilities, interests and needs. supporting bilingual/bicultural students.
- Bachelor's Degree (Advanced educational preparation in the area of ESL preferred)
- Knowledge and understanding of ELD instruction and second language acquisition.
- Such other alternatives as the Superintendent may deem acceptable and appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of those students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals aligned to the objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and communicate these objectives to students.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports.
- Assist with providing language assessment of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
- Provides individualized and small group English Language Development (ELD) instruction to English Learners (EL).
- Plans, develops, and implements ELD instruction and Massachusetts English language proficiency standards.
- Provides effective ELD classroom techniques and instruction to enhance second language acquisition and to gain academic language.
- Demonstrates effective techniques of classroom management, behavioral interventions, and communication to engage students.
- Demonstrates cultural proficiency and use of effective and culturally relevant instructional practices.
- Collaborates and communicates with SEI teacher(s) to align instruction. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
- Supports EL students' English language acquisition and classroom instructional needs (instructions, academic vocabulary, reading, writing support, and clarification of assignments).
- Assists with the oversight and delivery of Massachusetts state tests and administers screening tests for initial identification of EL students.
- Prepares for and assists with organization of EL students reclassification meetings for monitoring and for those ready to transition out of EL services.
- Attends professional ELD meetings as well as serves on building or district committees.
- Understands and complies with the state policies, rules, and regulations regarding English Learners.
- Such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal, Department Head and/or Assistant Superintendent.
