U.S. Committee for Refugee and Immigrants (USCRI) Rayo de Luz program is dedicated to providing unaccompanied minors who are pregnant or parenting, ages 0-18, with a supportive, nurturing environment in a residential shelter, daily education Monday - Friday, and supportive wrap-around services in Sacramento, CA. Our program is rooted in ensuring that service delivery is trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and tailored to the needs of each child while maintaining all program requirements of ORR.
OVERVIEW

The Lead Teacher will provide educational services and assessments, including curriculum building, meeting standards for educational requirements; Is responsible for curriculum development which facilitates instruction appropriate for students with a variety of academic competencies, backgrounds, skills, and learning needs; To design and implement daily instruction of all core subject areas to include: ESL, PE and Vocational Courses, in order to ensure compliance with government and organizational policies. The Teacher is to promote a positive climate of learning and excellence where students can enhance their developmental growth. The instructor may also serve as a liaison between the student, other classroom teachers and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment of respect and rapport to ensure a positive learning experience for youth with diverse backgrounds
  • Work under the supervision of the Assistant Director
  • Provide ESL Instruction by organizing and preparing materials for daily instruction while ensuring the inventory of classroom materials, may include: textbooks, furniture, and other equipment needed to assist in the provision of instruction.
  • Provide instruction to students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Individualize lesson plans to meet each student academic level.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate
  • Observe and evaluate students” work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students” varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Develop Individualized Educational Plans to report and document student”s developmental progress (cognitive, emotional, social and physical).
  • Maintain a record of student”s academic progress (grade book) for the development of weekly and progress report cards.
  • Meet departmental and program deadlines to ensure contractual compliance with reporting requirements
  • Respect to cultural and language differences, and providing cross-cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships;
  • Handle student issues within program and organizational policies (e.g. student requests for class changes, absenteeism, potential conflicts etc)


OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Attend mandatory trainings and other trainings to enhance professional development, participating in a minimum of 40 hours of required refresher trainings per calendar year-and assure that CPR and CPI training are completed annually within one year of the last date in which the employee last took them.
  • Attend all departmental and program meetings to ensure that up-to-date information is received and/or information of policy changes or practice are adhered to.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of special educational events to include but not limited to spelling bee, science fair, acculturation activities (to include but not limited to Cesar Chavez Day, Thanksgiving, Chinese New Year, Fourth of July, Cinco de Mayo, Dias de Muertos, Educational Outings (to include but not limited to visits to museums, Zoological gardens and aquariums)
  • Ensure the initial Academic Diagnostic Assessment is administered to youth within 72 hours upon arrival
  • Administer the post Academic Diagnostic Assessment within 45 days from the date of the initial assessment
  • Promptly report 1) any civil or criminal convictions, charges, arrests, investigations or adjudications- that may arise since staff member”s last background investigations, including but not limited to, and 2) having engaged in or attempted to engage in sexual abuse, sexual harassment or inappropriate sexual behavior; having been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in or attempted to engage in 1. or 2. Above
  • Adheres to other requests as indicated by AD

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor Degree;
  • TESOL/ESL Certificate;
  • Training to meet the special needs of unaccompanied children;
  • Cleared Tuberculosis test results.
  • Cleared background check from appropriate entity.
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a physical examination by a licensed medical practitioner before beginning assigned duties and at least every two years while working
  • CACI and FBI Clearances Required
  • Must be fully COVID vaccinated; Must provide be able to provide proof of vaccination.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English and Spanish language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups
  • Ability to select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when teaching new concepts
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and remain professional in all situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to collaborate with all stakeholders and an interest in working in a multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
