GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Adult Education ESL adjunct faculty reports to the Adult Education ESL Program Director and is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops effective second language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in each adult student.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching experience.
  • Master's degree or certificate in ESL/TESOL, preferred.

# Experience teaching ESL or a foreign language to adult learners, preferred.

CRITERIA:

The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Other information and observations made during the interview process may be considered in the selection process.
  • Provide instruction with the Program's ESL curriculum and prescribed texts/materials.
  • Prepare lessons incorporating review, warm-up and application activities that could augment textbook lessons.
  • Create activities that cultivate effective English language skills including speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation.
  • Monitor students' progress using formative assessments such as quizzes, projects, etc.
  • Maintain an appropriate classroom environment.
  • Track and manage students' attendance.
  • Assist students with their education and transition goals.
  • Participate in student intake, pre- and post-testing, as needed.
  • Work with the Program's staff to assure quality instruction.
  • Meet the Program's mandated attendance at professional development trainings as well as other staff meetings, team meetings, as necessary.
  • Other instructional duties, as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Understanding of Adult Learning Theory, preferred.
  • Understanding of Second Language Acquisition Theory, preferred.
  • Understanding of College and Career Readiness Standards, preferred.
  • Understanding of ESL intake and Adult Education assessments.
  • Understanding of ESL curriculum.
  • Familiarity with the college's Adult Education program.
  • Excellent written, oral, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytic and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and demonstration of computer skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and ability to work with

diverse populations.

Job Requirements
  • Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Unofficial transcripts must accompany application for teaching positions. Before an applicant can be recommended for hire, he/she must have an unofficial transcript on file with the college. Official transcripts of academic work required upon an offer of employment.
  • Documentation of experience and performance required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
