The Department of Corrections is looking to hire a Special Teacher for our Faribault Facility. The Special Teacher exists to ensure incarcerated students eligible for special education services receive educational programming that enables them to make progress toward their annual educational goals, to participate in the general curriculum as much as possible, and to prepare for a successful transition to adulthood. This includes effectively evaluating eligibility, determining present levels of educational performance, developing, and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), and facilitating transition planning. This position will also provide instruction in a well-managed and comprehensive instructional environment to any or all the following education programs: Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development diploma (GED), High School Diploma, English as a Second Language and English Language Learning (ESL/ELL), post-secondary preparation, and life skills.
Minimum Qualifications
To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
AND
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Professional K-12 Special Education Minnesota teaching license. *An applicant with a Tier 1 license may be considered if the DOC is unable to recruit an applicant with a Tier 2, 3, or 4 teaching license in the specific licensure field required. Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Possession of a current Minnesota Tier 3 or 4 teaching license.
- Experience working in an education setting.
- Experience working in a correctional setting.
- Experience teaching Special Education.
- Full-time teaching experience as a licensed teacher.
Physical Requirements

Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
