Description

This part-time faculty Instructor will teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses in the ESOL department. Currently this position will work T/Th evenings at the Harmony campus. The typical teaching assignment will be one or more courses meeting 33-66 hours per term and opportunity for future employment, contingent on the availability of classes.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Instructs students in a classroom. Provides student contact before and after class and by telephone, video conferencing, scheduled meetings or email exchanges during office hours where facilities and schedules permit.

Prepares, distributes and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate; incorporates the latest classroom technology when available and appropriate to instructional activities.

Structures classes and curriculum to correspond with the overall program outcomes and specific student learning outcomes as stated on the approved course outline; prepares clear objectives for students for each course.

Understands, develops and provides a learning environment that supports diversity and incorporates sensitivity to diversity within the college community.

Responsible for classroom and departmental equipment and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate.

Understands and abides by college policies and regulations and other policies, procedures and materials as required by the college, departments or divisions.

Convenes classes on time and as scheduled.

Maintains evaluation and grading records for assigned students; enters grades and provides all necessary documentation for incompletes within established college timelines and guidelines.

Participates in ongoing professional development and maintains currency in ESOL pedagogy according to personal needs and as required by the department.

Ensures and emphasizes safe working and classroom conditions and practices.

May direct aides and work study students as assigned.

Understands and uses the college's computer system.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

May provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Knowledge of FERPA requirements. Attend department meetings. Maintain proficiency by attending professional development workshops, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility.

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in TESOL, Adult Education or related field with a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours in TESOL or Adult Education. Two years of relevant experience. The ability to communicate effectively as a teacher and to operate as an effective member of a team.

Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives and abilities.

Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the College's culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to change.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with Title II program learning standards.

Experience with integrating digital literacy into classroom lessons.

NNEST (Nonnative English-Speaking Teacher).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the use of step stools in order to retrieve archived materials. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment includes classroom, lab, or other setting as appropriate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Department Chair.
