Description

The Methodist University Writing Center is inviting applications for the part time position of Professional ESOL Writing Consultant. Part time is less than 20 hours a week. Professional ESOL Writing Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Consulting individually with undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff on their writing projects and assignments, specifically students who identify as ESL, first generation, or ESOL students. This work involves a holistic, whole-person approach,
  • Encouraging development of analytical skills by addressing identification of research question, organization of argument or exposition, incorporation of source material, and coherence and clarity of thesis statements, hypotheses, positions, and evidence,
  • Helping students develop effective skills to brainstorm ideas, narrow their research questions as needed, identify and fill research gaps, create smooth transitions in thought, overcome writer's block, and avoid plagiarism by distinguishing between common knowledge and material whose source must be documented,
  • Teaching students proper grammar as a foundation for clear and effective communication, and offering resources for further reference,
  • Providing knowledgeable consultation services for those writing in the natural sciences, including medicine, biology, chemistry, physical therapy and occupational therapy-on both undergraduate and graduate levels,
  • Providing expert consultation and instruction to undergraduates in the Legal Studies Program and to any remaining Masters of Justice Administration students,
  • Teaching advanced material on structuring research papers and the effective use of outside sources for graduate students in the Physician Assistant, Masters of Education, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Doctor of Occupational Therapy programs,
  • Teaching the particular requirements of various style manuals, including APA, MLA, AMA, Council of Science Editors, Chicago/Turabian, APSA and ASA, especially as they concern proper documentation of sources,
  • Designing, customizing, and delivering presentations and workshops, both for the student body at large and as requested for courses,
  • Participating in conferences, workshops, classes and other opportunities to further develop teaching and writing skills.
