Primary Purpose
The ABS / ELL instructor provides instruction necessary for literate functioning to adults in reading, writing, English language acquisition, computing (through elementary algebra), listening, or speaking in the context of personal, jobs skills and career development. Instructors assist students to apply learned skills to real life situations. Curriculum delivery includes recognition of the many student learning styles, measurement of student progress, and flexibility in meeting individual student needs. Instruction may be delivered in a variety of modalities including in-person, hybrid, and online delivery.
Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and implement standards-based instruction in a classroom setting through large and small group work and individual instruction. Administer standardizes and informal assessments to students to determine placement. progress, and to advise students on educational goals and next steps.
- Create curriculum and lesson materials based on learning objectives and students' needs and adapts materials to create an engaged and productive learning environment.
- Complete, maintain, and submit local, state, and federal forms as needed and in a timely manner. Provide accurate and timely information to the appropriate personnel concerning enrollment and attendance.
- Create and maintain rapport and work collaboratively with other faculty and staff.
- Complete training/professional development as needed for delivering CASAS and other tests as required by HECC and ABS / ELL department.
- Work in tandem with other faculty to support students' academic success in CTE , workforce training, and other courses as part of an Integrated Education Training ( IET ) team.
Department Specific
This is a part-time instructor position, non-represented, non-benefited (potential future benefited status based on number of classes and duration of assignments), not eligible for overtime.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
- Knowledge of teaching and instruction to various audiences including students with different learning styles and must have the ability to adapt instructional methods to them.
- Knowledge of how to teach basic reading, writing, and math skills and a proven ability to do so is required. Knowledge of teaching English language learners if teaching ELL .
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multicultural and diverse populations and historical experiences.
- Knowledge of planning, implementing, and supporting social and educational programs and activities.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and to use good judgment with respect to priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to communicate information effectively regarding College policies and procedures to students.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds. Ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups and to work in a team environment. Ability to develop strong working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.
- Ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am - 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor's degree Education, English, Math, or related field.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of related professional work experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree in Education, English, Math, or related field.
Experience:
- Experience in a higher education setting.
- Training or coursework in teaching foundational skills.
Certification:
- TESOL or ELL certification is recommended but not required
