Founded in 1915, the Middlebury Language Schools (https://www.middlebury.edu/language-schools/) is known for the Language Pledge®, a commitment to support students to communicate only in their target language for the entire time they are with our programs. An integral part of Middlebury College, the Language Schools offer 13 languages with students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 75 foreign countries.

Position Summary

The Director of the School determines and supervises the instructional and co-curricular program, including lectures, films, concerts, field trips, etc.; he/she hires the School’s faculty and summer staff, works with instructors on developing and implementing curriculum, administers the School's budget, supervises student progress, provides advice and support to students, faculty colleagues, and staff, and represents the School at professional meetings.

This position is required in-person during the summer session (Monterey, CA) and remote the remainder of the year.

Essential Functions

The Director spends the summer in residence on the Monterey campus where he/she oversees the instructional and co-curricular program, and generally teaches one organized course. During the academic year and working remotely, the Director plans the curriculum, hires faculty and summer staff, evaluates and publicizes the program, assists with recruiting students, and oversees the admissions process.

  • quality of instruction
  • exercise of fiscal responsibility
  • promotion of curricular development
  • recruitment of students
  • effective representation of Middlebury
  • student satisfaction
