Position Description/General Summary:

The Associate Director (AD) is responsible for the oversight of the CELOP academic program. This includes the recruitment, orientation, supervision, review, and leadership of the CELOP faculty; ensuring that curriculum and co-curricular activities are of a high quality and relevant to student needs; and designing and implementing new curricula and curricular components. The AD serves as a member of the CELOP administrative leadership team, supporting the Managing Director in identifying and achieving strategic goals, and representing the CELOP academic program to BU and external constituents. The AD has three administrative direct reports and oversees all CELOP full-time (10) and part-time (approximately 30) faculty.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

  • Plans, reviews, and monitors all aspects of the CELOP academic program to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and good practices in the field, and implements course corrections when necessary. Oversees curriculum and works with faculty to ensure that curriculum is relevant to student needs and that valid and reliable student assessment measures are implemented. (20%)

  • Leads faculty in maintaining and improving academic program quality, developing and implementing new programs and initiatives. Encourages faculty to engage in professional development, and staying current with relevant theory, research, and practice. Manages classes for multiple programs, assigns faculty, manages faculty appointment forms and provides planning and scheduling for various programs. Provides leadership on student services and classroom utilization. Responsible for the overall recruitment, orientation, supervision and evaluation of full-time and part-time faculty. Ensures that CELOP academic programs remain true to the CELOP mission. (20%)

  • Collaborates with the administrative leadership team in devising and implementing the CELOP strategic plan, and monitors progress toward goals in the academic and student life areas. (20%)

  • Works with admissions and recruitment staff to ensure that CELOP programs are represented completely and accurately in recruitment materials. Builds relationships with multiple constituencies, including CELOP faculty, staff, and students, BU staff, and external partners. (15%)

  • Manages reports, including part-time faculty payroll, part-time faculty hire approvals as well as annual accreditation reports. Responsible for data collection (such as student advancement numbers and student feedback) pertaining to academic programs. Analyses and utilizes results in program review and development. Reviews student feedback, conducts faculty annual reviews; recommends merit pay allocations. Conducts regular staff and faculty meetings. Supervises, has

    hire/fire/disciplinary authority and evaluates performance of 3 administrative staff members (15%)

  • Develops, revises, and communicates policies and procedures pertaining to CELOP academic programs. (10%)

Required Qualifications, Skills, Abilities:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant area such as TESOL, Language Education, or Applied Linguistics required. Additionally, a doctoral degree in one of these fields or in International Education or Educational Leadership is preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a faculty and curriculum leadership role, preferably in a university- based intensive English program and minimum of 5 years’ teaching experience in post-secondary English language programs, with demonstrated teaching excellence. Some experience teaching abroad preferred.

  • Record of ongoing professional development and contributions to the field of English language teaching.

  • Knowledge of language teaching methods and techniques, educational and pedagogical principles,

    sociological and psycholinguistic contexts of language learning, second language curriculum, assessment, acquisition theory and research, English language acquisition, teaching materials, educational technology, English language program accreditation.

  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office and database use preferred.

  • Fluency in English and knowledge of at least one foreign language and familiarity with/empathy for

    individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

  • High level of organization and attention to detail combined with ability to see the big picture.

  • Collegiality, collaboration, and commitment to participatory leadership required.

  • Assertiveness in enforcing program policies.

  • Ability to work under pressure and overtime when needed and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Willingness to continue learning.

  • High level of professionalism and positive attitude required.
