University of Delaware English Language Institute

Adjunct Classroom Instructor – Face-to-Face or Online

Start Dates: Jan 3, February 27, May 1, July 3

The University of Delaware’s English Language Institute (UD ELI) is looking to hire a number of well qualified ESL adjuncts beginning in January. The supplemental classroom instructor teaches 8.5 contact hours per week per class assigned. For each class, the supplemental instructor is responsible for all lesson and material preparation, grading, student advisement, professional development opportunities—as well as all professional and administrative session duties associated with being an ELI instructor (e. g., attending faculty meetings, participating in professional development opportunities, departmental functions such as graduation ceremonies, cultural activities for students, new student intake duties, and end of session test administration). Depending on the class assignment, this person will report either to the Associate Director for Academic Programs or the Manager of the Intensive English Program (IEP).

Qualifications for the position include:

  • Master’s Degree in either Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics.
  • Classroom experience in an IEP or comparable program.
  • Strong written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching multiple levels and skill areas.

Wages for this position vary based on the teacher’s education level and the class contact hours:

  • For a 4-week class, the pay rate is $2,629.50 to $3,005, depending on contact hours.
  • For an 8-week class, the pay rate is $5,259.

The UD ELI is a leader in the field of English as a Second Language. With an annual enrollment of over 1,500 students, the ELI offers intensive English certificate programs for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students, business professionals, and general English language learners. The ELI also offers specialized programs in English for academic purposes (EAP), teacher training, business English, short-term culture courses, and student learning support courses. Appropriately qualified supplemental classroom instructors may be assigned courses within any of these areas.

To apply, please submit your CV/resume and cover letter specifying your face-to-face or online preference and availability dates. Send this information to Robbie Bushong (rbushong@udel.edu).

*With Masters degrees.  Rates are higher for adjuncts holding Ph.D.’s.
