Position description

This is a tenure-track position in Teaching English as a Second Language/Applied Linguistics (TESL/APLI) at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on Second Language Pedagogy: School-Age Children in Multilingual Communities. Duties include research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution. More specifically, the selected ccandidate will be expected to contribute to Concordia’s BEd in TESL and MA in Applied Linguistics as well as the doctoral program in Education. An important component of these programs is to ensure that teachers, education specialists, and researchers are familiar with pedagogical approaches that explicitly validate and draw on school-age children’s knowledge of home or community languages. Candidates should be prepared to help ESL teachers-in-training develop the professional competency of taking diversity into account by incorporating children’s knowledge of home and community languages into their second language learning.

Qualifications and assets

Through their research, teaching, and service, the selected candidate should be able to prepare teachers to support the linguistic diversity of their students, within the context of the Quebec Ministry of Education’s (MEES) Reference Framework for Professional Competencies for teachers. As a result, this position requires substantial theoretical and practical expertise in the area of second language learning and teaching for children from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Teacher certification in a relevant area or teaching experience in K-12 settings is preferred.

Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree or be near completion at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are scholarly and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates are encouraged to share any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals in their letter of application. These will be carefully considered in the assessment process. The Department values diversity among its faculty and strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented groups. Concordia University is an English-language institution of higher learning at which the primary language of instruction and research is English. Since this position supports academic functions of the university, proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is an asset.

How to Apply

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and Permanent Residents will be given priority. To comply with the Government of Canada’s reporting requirements, the University is obliged to gather information about applicants’ status as either Permanent Residents of Canada or Canadian citizens. While applicants need not identify their country of origin or current citizenship, all applicants must include one of the following statements:

  4. a research statement describing the candidate’s research program, including plans in the area of second language learning and teaching for children from diverse linguistic backgrounds;
  5. a brief description of their three most important research contributions to date or three representative publications;
  6. evidence of teaching expertise and effectiveness (such as teaching evaluations)
  7. three letters of reference.

Electronic applications should be sent to education.apply@concordia.ca; by November 15, 2022 but will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. Only short-listed candidates will be notified. The appointment is expected to commence in August 2023.
