About Harris County Juvenile Probation (HCJPD)

The Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) provides supervision and services to youth between the ages of 10 and 17, who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court. HCJPD is the largest juvenile probation department in Texas with approximately 1,100 employees and over 3,500 youth referred to the department annually. HCJPD programs and services operate under the direction of the Harris County Juvenile Board. The Administration building is located in Downtown Houston, Texas, with several field offices throughout the County and three secure residential facilities.

About Education Services:

The Education Services Division provides educational programs for expelled students, troubled youth placed in a county-operated juvenile institution, and students on probation who want an alternative to the traditional high school campus. The Juvenile Probation Department is solely responsible for all programs of the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP), Excel Academy Charter School, and the Education Transition Center (ETC).

About the Position:

The ELA/ESL Teacher provides students with appropriate learning, activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Teachers manage multiple courses during each class period while ensuring student perform at the optimum level, and encourage a therapeutic environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Develops and implements lesson plans with necessary accommodations that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program, based on TEKS, as well as LPAC requirements for multiple grades and subjects.
* Maintains accuracy of student's grades, work, and documentation related to special populations.
* Creates classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
* Works cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

Requirements

Education:

* Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in English or Education from an accredited college or university.
* Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during hiring process.

Licensure:

* A valid Texas Teaching certification in English and ESL conferred by the Texas State Board of Education.
* Employees who hold this position are required to possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's license.
* Employee must maintain liability insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by law.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Must be 21 years old.
* This position involves working with challenging youth where use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Additional Requirements:

* Every employee is subject to random testing for drugs and alcohol or if there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the employee is under the influence of a substance prohibited by this policy while in the course and scope of employment.
* All new employees are required to undergo and pass a physical examination administered by the Department Approved Contract Physician. At the time of the physical, applicants must present evidence of tuberculosis (TB) skin test. In the event of a positive test, the applicant will be required to provide additional documentation.
* Upon receiving a conditional job offer, every applicant undergoes a criminal background check, drug screening, an achievement test, and psychological and physical examinations.
* If a public emergency is declared by the county, staff could be assigned to other duties and/or facilities and/or under the supervision of another county department.

Salary:

* $46,446.67 - $57,471.90 annually
* Based on 26 Pay Periods



Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
