ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

Director of English Language Centre (Ref. 220712010)

The English Language Centre (ELC), with a strong commitment to quality learning and teaching, aims to enhance student’s communication skills, foster students’ independent, life-long English language learning and whole-person development.  The Centre offers credit-bearing English language subjects and language enhancement programmes to students from all Faculties and Schools within the University.  It also offers general education and service-learning subjects as well as subjects for postgraduate research students, and provides various opportunities and facilities for students to independently pursue English language proficiency.  The Centre currently has around 80 teaching staff members, with about 25 technical, research and administrative personnel.  Please visit the Centre’s website at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/elc/ for more information.

The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Director of English Language Centre.  The successful candidate will normally be appointed as Principal Teaching Fellow on an appropriate term, commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and will hold a concurrent directorship appointment.  The concurrent directorship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office. 

Job Functions

The position calls for a visionary leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Centre.  Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, the appointee will be required to:

(a)    provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Centre, in alignment with the University’s and Faculty’s Strategic Plans, and provide leadership, coaching and support to all staff members in the Centre in pursuit of planned objectives in a high-quality and cost-effective manner;

(b)    oversee and manage all businesses of the Centre including the delivery of subjects that it offers;

(c)    ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Centre;

(d)    represent the Centre to liaise with the Centre’s stakeholders for the planning and delivery of the Centre’s subjects;

(e)    take a leading role in the Centre’s curriculum-design and pedagogies functions, and other academic and scholarly initiatives, including promotion of pedagogic innovations in relation to English language education, scholarly investigation of educational needs of students, etc.;

(f)     ensure the quality and relevance of the Centre’s teaching activities with the aims of enhancing students’ communication skills;

(g)    develop and lead initiatives that enable and encourage the sharing and promotion of good teaching practice;

(h)    undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs; and

(i)     undertake other duties as assigned by the Dean of Faculty or the Central Management Team of the University from time to time.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD or a professional doctorate degree in Applied Linguistics, Educational Research, Language Education or a related field;

(b)    at least ten years of relevant post-qualification experience with substantial experience serving as a Principal/Senior Lecturer or an Assistant Professor or above in higher education;

(c)    proven administrative and management capabilities, excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication and team-building skills;

(d)    proven track record in teaching excellence that creates deep and lasting impact on student learning and development;

(e)    proven educational leadership in teaching innovation and significant contributions to improve teaching quality and promote a culture of good teaching at department/centre level or beyond and other forms of contributions leading to system-wide impact;

(f)     outstanding contribution in programme development leading to substantial enhancement in the quality of educational provision; and

(g)    proven track record in leading innovation in education, and/or proven track record in scholarship of teaching and learning as evidenced by teaching development grants or other funding obtained related to teaching and learning projects, and high-impact scholarly works or publications and educational research output.

Preference will be given to those with good knowledge of higher education environment in Hong Kong.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  An appropriate term will be provided for appointment to the post.
