Job Description

Description:
The American Dream Charter School serves grades 6-12 in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, targeting English language learners and immigrant students. The mission of the American Dream School is to develop academic excellence in both Spanish and English, preparing students to excel in college and become leaders in their communities.

Role :
The School Director is an integral member of the administration overseeing curriculum development and instructional practices in all classrooms. The school director will also implement and maintain clear systems for lesson planning and delivery, which result in the exemplary instructional practices.

Principal/Head of School

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Educational Leadership or related field
  • Seven years full-time successful teaching experience in a 6-12 setting
  • A proven record of successful leadership and achievement
  • NYS teacher certification and SBL certification
  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish

Preferred Qualities:

  • Possess strong leadership and team skills
  • Have superb organizational and self-management skills and be able to handle multiple responsibilities effectively
  • Training in and implementation of the Common Core State Standards (and now Next Gen Standards)
  • Experience with data analysis and using data to target instruction and inform decision making
  • Experience working with TESOL, SIOP, and CALLA framework , Dual language experience a plus
  • Proven track record of closing the achievement gap

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership

  • Manage all core academic teachers, overseeing the development of curricula and implementation of high-quality research-based pedagogical practices in all classrooms;
  • Supports individual teachers in improving instructional practice and reaching professional goals;
  • In conjunction with the Middle/High School Director, develop and monitor the execution of the school's Professional Development Plan;
  • Implements on-going development of curriculum and instruction with the support of the school Principal, consultants and department coaches/specialists;
  • Plans and facilitates meetings with instructional staff;
  • Implement and support curriculum and assessment procedures as mandated by state and federal guidelines;
  • Use data systems to organize and analyze data to be used by school staff to inform decision making, program modification and planning for targeted, differentiated instruction;
  • Monitor the pacing and implementation of the education program as outlined in the curricular map;
  • Support and train content area teachers to increase their knowledge and level of comfort with data, as well as to diagnose and monitor student learning and discuss data trends to inform program implementation, modification and planning for targeted and differentiated instruction;
  • Suggest methods by which to alleviate educational deficits and recommend resources in the development of academic intervention and academic enrichment services;
  • Communicate with parents about the instructional program;
  • Communicates the school's vision and builds teams to support its mission, vision, and values.

Data Analysis and Curriculum Alignment

  • Use data systems to organize and analyze data to be used by school staff to inform decision making, program modification and planning for targeted, differentiated instruction
  • Monitor the pacing and implementation of the education program as outlined in the curricular framework
  • Support and train content area teachers to increase their knowledge and level of comfort with data, as well as discuss data trends to inform program implementation, modification and planning for targeted and differentiated instruction
  • Suggest methods by which to alleviate educational deficits and recommend resources in the development of academic intervention and academic enrichment services

Staff Oversight and Development

  • In coordination with the Principal/Head of School, evaluate school performance data to make holistic and individual recommendations for improving instructional practices;
  • Plans and leads professional development aligned with school's goals;
  • Plans and implements summer training for new staff with other School Director, Principal and Staff Developers;
  • Meets with teachers about individual professional development goals;
  • Seeks professional development opportunities for self, individuals and entire staff to support goals in coordination with school goals;
  • Participates and facilitates Instructional Leadership Team meetings
  • Oversee and meet with Grade Level Team Leaders to support their planning of data-driven agendas for weekly meetings
  • Coordinates and supervises after-school programs

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee use of materials and resource allocation
  • Coordinate all state and school-based assessments
  • Implement a test sophistication curriculum school wide
  • Coordinates testing, including Interim Assessments and the NYS Testing Program (including Regents)
  • Work with Operations Manager to ensure day to day operations are flowing seamlessly;
  • Work with Ops Manager and Dean to program student events such as ceremonies, concerts, etc.

Fostering a Culture of High Academic Expectations

  • Support teachers in developing parent workshops in all content areas and include parents in the ongoing process of planning and supporting special programs;
  • Supports the Dean to ensure students feel safe and secure while being successful academically;

Staff Supervision and Evaluation

  • Ensure staff is completing Weekly Planning Overview, Unit Plans, and Lesson Plans by designated deadline;
  • Ensure staff is implementing the best co-teaching model in their classrooms (avoiding 1 Teach, 1 assist)
  • Ensure staff is adhering to duties assigned (breakfast, lunch, recess, team meetings, etc.)
  • Communicate with DOO if trends of lateness or absenteeism occur with instructional staff;
  • Recruits, screens, and assists in the hiring, training, and evaluation of teachers;
  • Complete any other tasks or duties as assigned by the Principal/Head of School
