Job Summary

The English Language Institute (ELI), an academic unit of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), invites applicants for a full-time Lecturer III position in English for academic purposes (EAP), to begin August 29, 2022. This is a non-tenure-track, university-year appointment. The initial appointment will be for 100% effort for three (3) years and renewable for additional multi-year periods, contingent upon successful performance reviews. There may be additional opportunities for spring/summer teaching or administrative duties. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full U-M benefits package. The appointment is subject to final approval by the LSA Executive Committee. 

 

Since its founding in 1941, the ELI has been a leader in second language teaching and materials development at the University of Michigan and throughout the world. The ELI provides a full range of credit-bearing courses in English for Academic Purposes for international students at the University of Michigan, teacher education courses, as well as non-credit academic and language support services for international students and scholars. ELI also partners with other U-M units in support of the University's global learning and engagement initiatives and advocates for international students and others in the U-M community who were raised or educated in a language other than English. Responsibilities

  • Teaching load will be determined by departmental needs, but is expected to include a mix of two to four graduate EAP writing courses per semester in addition to providing one-on-one writing support in ELI’s Graduate Writing Clinic. 
  • In addition to providing classroom instruction, ELI Lecturers are expected to attend departmental meetings, hold regular weekly office hours, serve on departmental committees, and handle routine matters related to instruction. 

  • This position will include administrative effort to coordinate ELI’s graduate writing curriculum in collaboration with the Graduate Writing Curriculum faculty working group.

     

Additional Responsibilities

ELI Lecturers are required to: 

  • Participate in pre- and in-term student advising, curricular development, outreach, and other service to the department. 
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and with the wider fields of EAP/ESP and graduate communication

  • Establish and consistently maintain an inclusive classroom climate 

     

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (PhD strongly preferred) in applied linguistics, second language writing, graduate communication, TESOL, or closely related field OR PhD in an unrelated discipline, along with significant coursework in applied linguistics, second language writing, graduate communication, TESOL, or closely related field
  • At least three years’ experience teaching graduate EAP writing

  • Ability to develop original authentic EAP teaching materials

  • Advanced familiarity with and facility using a broad range of current digital language learning technologies in online and/or blended teaching contexts

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate and engage positively with students, faculty and staff with a wide-range of backgrounds, experiences, and identities

  • Deep familiarity with the conventions of graduate writing across disciplines

  • A deep knowledge base that includes familiarity with current theory, new research, trends, and best practices in EAP/ESP and graduate communication

  • A demonstrated record of teaching innovation and collaboration

 

Desired Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Substantial experience teaching dissertation writing and writing for publication
  •  Record of academic publications
  • Experience advising and/or mentoring graduate students

  • Academic program coordination or grant writing experience

  • Experience studying or working abroad and as a second-language learner
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple projects and prioritize deadlines

 

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
