Position Title: ESL Teacher Location: Goodwill LEP Career Advance / 25 Elm Place

General Purpose:

Teach English as a Second Language with a focus on immigrants and their pathway to citizenship and self-sufficiency. Work cooperatively with program case managers to monitor participants' attendance and progress. Conduct student evaluations as appropriate.

Essential Functions:

• Develop curriculum and prepare lessons for the ESL Job Readiness Course. • Prepare lessons and enhancement activities to address participants' skill development in all subject areas (food services, home care, ESL, GED and more). • Prepare classroom reports monitoring student's progress, areas of improvement, graduation rate (including certifications), and placement rate (sector, wage, and upward mobility). • Teaches various employability skills, computer softwares and job readiness through the use of strong motivational strategies, methodologies and techniques • Identifies and assesses goals for self-sufficiency, and provides contextualized ESL training in interviewing skills, resume writing, difficult interviewing questions and other barriers towards getting a job that leads to a livable wage • Implement and create ESL job readiness curriculum, and utilizes motivational skills and capabilities that improve life management and employability • Aid students in acquiring stackable credentials designed to secure mid-level employment • Work with the program's case managers for those requiring additional assistance. • Ability to present classroom lessons/curriculum in a multi media format. • Prepare classroom reports monitoring students' progress and areas needing improvement. • Keep a running track of participants (both current and past graduates) via student progress reports. • Handle other tasks as assigned by management


Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

• B.A. minimum requirement; • Certified to administer the BEST Plus ESL assessment preferred • Experience with ESL and contextualized literacy instruction preferred

• Excellent written and oral communication skills required • Knowledge of computer applications. • Extremely organized and detail-oriented person preferred • Experience with multi-level classroom instruction preferred • Must be energetic and creative with ability to establish and maintain student/teacher relationships • Must be a team player with good work ethic • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize demands


Scope of Responsibility & Positions Supervised:

Receives direction from management. Responsible for the academic progress of students. Must be able to work with the director to identify students' level of difficulty and accomplishment in class work for the purpose of determining appropriate class level and/or career pathway. Ability to relate to students in a manner conducive to building self esteem and confidence which may directly affect students' ability to overcome barriers.


Special Working Conditions:

Population consists of newly arrived immigrants and New Yorkers with an English language barrier. In addition, students may have multiple barriers to participation in which can impact on attendance in class and focus.
