Position description

The English Language Institute at UCSD in La Jolla is seeking ESL teachers for 8-week programs, 4-week and Custom programs, substitute teaching, and evening classes. Applications are reviewed regularly for upcoming programs as the needs arise. Experience teaching in a university-based Intensive English Program is desired.

Position is by-agreement. A by-agreement teacher will only work when there is a Letter of Agreement that spells out the terms for a particular teaching assignment. Factors that determine the number of teaching assignments that an instructor undertakes/completes include instructor availability and desire to teach, Extension course offerings and enrollments, instructor effectiveness, and UCSD academic cycles. By-agreement instructors have no guarantee of future work/courses.

To be considered, candidates must already be located within easy commuting distance of La Jolla, CA, and be available to teach variable hours in the mornings and afternoons, five days per week. Available classes include general English as well as specialty classes in TOEFL or IELTS preparation, Business English, Conversation, Idioms and Slang, Grammar, Writing, Pronunciation, and Academic English. Maximum teaching hours are 15 - 20 hours per week.

Specific Duties

  • Prepare and execute lesson plans in keeping with the course title and description, course objective, and student learning outcomes of assigned courses.
  • Assess student characteristics, needs, interests, and learning styles, and develop new course materials and activities to maximize the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Revise lessons to include information and topics which are current and relevant for International ESL students.
  • Update teaching methodology to reflect current technology and developments in second language teaching.
  • Hold conferences with students as needed to address individual needs.
  • Evaluate all students in courses assigned during the first few days of the program to determine that students are appropriately placed. Initiate class changes if students are not appropriately placed.
  • Assign homework regularly; correct and return it promptly.
  • Maintain currency in the field through participation in professional development activities.

According to UC San Diego academic hiring rules, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by-agreement". The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
