Description: The English Language Institute at UCSD in La Jolla, San Diego is seeking ESL teachers for 8-week programs, 4-week and Custom programs, substitute teaching, and evening classes. Applications are reviewed regularly for upcoming programs as the needs arise. Experience teaching in a university-based Intensive English Program is desired.Specific Duties* Prepare and execute lesson plans in keeping with the course title and description, course objective, and student learning outcomes of assigned courses.* Assess student characteristics, needs, interests, and learning styles, and develop new course materials and activities to maximize the effectiveness of instruction.* Revise lessons to include information and topics which are current and relevant for ELI students. Update teaching methodology to reflect current technology and developments in second language teaching.* Hold conferences with students as needed to address individual needs.* Evaluate all students in courses assigned during the first few days of the program to determine that students are appropriately placed. Initiate class changes if students are not appropriately placed.* Assign homework regularly; correct and return it promptly.* Maintain currency in the field through participation in professional development activities.Minimum Qualifications1. Master's degree or higher in TESOL, or Master's degree in closely related field (e.g. Applied Linguistics) with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours successfully completed in the following areas:* Language teaching methodology* The nature of language (e.g. linguistics)* English structure* Second language acquisition* Intercultural communication* PracticumRequired Qualifications* Excellent proficiency in English* Outstanding oral and written communication skills* Flexibility and collaborative approach to work responsibilities* Experience in at least one of the following areas: curriculum development, test preparation, online teaching, business/professional English, second language assessment, teacher training, content-based instruction, or program administration.* Working knowledge of the LMS CANVASSpecial Conditions of Employment1. To be considered, candidates must already be located within easy commuting distance of La Jolla, CA, and be available to teach variable hours in the mornings and afternoons, five days per week. Available classes include general English as well as specialty classes in TOEFL or IELTS preparation, Business English, Conversation, Idioms and Slang, Grammar, Writing, Pronunciation, and Academic English.2. Maximum teaching hours are 15 - 20 hours per week, and the salary range is $36-46/per hour based on qualifications and experience.According to UC San Diego academic hiring rules, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are 'by-agreement'. The instructor's Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. UC San Diego Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed instructor Letter of Agreement. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the instructor agreement, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.
