General Scope of Position:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Provost for International Programs, the Director of the English Language Training Institute (ELTI) provides visionary leadership to support specialized areas within the Office of International Programs (OIP) including English language training and short-term intercultural programs.  The team consists of full-time administrative staff members, full-time core faculty members, and adjunct instructors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with the Assistant Provost and the ELTI faculty to improve and expand the programs offered through ELTI to serve and meet the needs of international students and internationalization efforts.
  • Provide leadership and management of the ELTI Office operations.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the ELTI faculty, students and staff, including the institutions data management requirements.
  • Coordinate under direction of the PDSO, the regulatory compliance for hosting international students in the ELTI program.
  • Maintain oversight and responsibility for the budget and general fiscal matters with support from the main OIP administrative unit
  • Supervise the development and implementation of curriculum offered in ELTI.
  • Teach or substitute teach ELTI courses when necessary.
  • Oversee the International Instructor Language Support Program which provides International Teaching Assistants’ support and language consultation; language evaluation of international faculty; and programmatic outreach (e.g., workshops, resources) in compliment with the Graduate School.
  • Oversee Office of Intercultural and Educational Experiences (OIEE) which offers the inbound short-term intercultural training program component of ELTI in collaboration with the programming staff.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the international student recruitment strategy for
  • Serve as an engaged partner on the OIP senior leadership team, actively supporting the UNC Charlotte and OIP mission to strengthen international and global learning initiatives for the university.
  • Collaborate with the degree-seeking international admissions offices for
  • Maintain strong operational relations and partnership with pertinent offices that intersect with the mission of ELTI (e.g., housing, registrar, public safety, accounts payable, etc.).
  • Represent ELTI, OIP and the University effectively in both internal and external relationships.

Accountability: As a member of the Office of International Programs s/he is accountable for:

  • Manifesting the Mission, Vision and Values of the University
  • Initiating programs and services that promote intercultural exchange, knowledge and understanding within and between the U.S domestic and international communities
  • Assisting in developing programs through which UNC Charlotte and the community can benefit from the presence of international students and scholars
  • Identifying problems, making recommendations, implementing solutions, and evaluating outcomes for programs/services
  • Developing cohesive programming that supports the needs of various constituent groups—within the Office of International Programs, the University, and Charlotte community
  • Recognizing and celebrating the achievements and contributions of all students

Qualifications: 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in ESL, Applied Linguistics or closely related field
  • Five years of experience teaching ESL to non-native speakers in a post-secondary educational setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and successful track record of accomplishment in university intensive English program administration and management
  • Three years of experience in developing ESL curriculum preferably for a variety of language levels
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including cross-cultural communication competencies
  • Responsibility for budget projection/management
  • Supervisory experience for administrative and instructional staff
  • Familiarity with immigration regulations as they impact IEP enrollments
  • Recruitment and management experience for international students and instructional staff
  • Evidence of commitment to the field of international (demonstrated professiona linvolvement:i.e. publications,engagement with
  • Ability to travel within the USA and overseas
  • Promotion of effective engagement of U.S. domestic and international students through programs and/or classroom instruction.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a SEVIS Designated School Official and/or Alternate Responsible Officer
  • Affiliation with and leadership in NAFSA: Association of International Educators or other relevant international education association
  • Successful grant writing and grant administration experience
  • Experience working, living, teaching, and/or studying abroad
