Director, Al-Quds Bard Academy, and Head of EFL Division
Marking its thirteenth year of operation, Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) is an innovative program introducing a liberal arts undergraduate education to the West Bank, with an enrollment of approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students in 2020-2021. Many of the students enter their programs through AQB’s English preparatory programs, where they not only gain academic English language skills, but also the necessary critical thinking and other academic skills required to succeed at AQB.
We seek a Director for the AQB Academy, a new one-year program that prepares English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to enter into a rigorous liberal arts program; the Academy will fully launch with a class of 12-15 students in Fall 2021. The director is responsible for the design and continuous improvement of the Academy curriculum, supervision of Academy faculty, implementation of extracurricular activities (in cooperation with AQB’s student services staff), and is responsible for monitoring the progress and students and for the overall administration of the program. As Director of AQB Academy, they will work closely with AQB Program Manager based in Annandale, New York, in developing a work plan and ensuring that grant requirements for the program are met, as well as actively communicating the milestones in establishing the AQB Academy and issuing reports for existing and potential donors who express interest.
The Director will also serve as Division Head of English Language Programs to manage all aspects of AQB's English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programming. As head, they will work with administrators and college faculty, build and adjust curricula and syllabi to university and accreditation standards, coordinate division course and activity schedules, recruit students, interview and hire EFL faculty, and participate in College Council and all-faculty/staff meetings. The Head will also take closely monitor the academic progress of all students in the Academy and in the Pylon program (a separate intensive academic English program), leading the process of making recommendations to the dean regarding the academic progress and status of those students. Additionally, the Head will engage and manage AQB’s EFL projects of the Open Society University Network (OSUN), of which Al-Quds Bard College is an original member. In collaboration with the Academic Resource Center (ARC) Director and the Head of the Core Division, the Division Head of English Language Programs will be involved in ESL development and training for faculty and fellows to be implemented in AQB coursework, involving in particular task-based and content-based instruction techniques.
The Academy Director and Head will have some teaching responsibilities during the Fall and Spring semesters. Their teaching methods should be student-centered, involving students in active discussion and group tasks to develop their reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills in English.
● PhD (preferred) or MA in TESOL or related field
● Institution-building and program management experience, preferably with total immersion
● University-level teaching experience
● Experience with curriculum-building
● Enthusiasm for the mission of the College to provide student-centered teaching, foster critical
thinking, and incorporate writing into every class
● Fluent written and spoken English
