Directs, plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of a specialized unit or small department; develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities. Serves as liaison with university personnel and community at large. Works under general supervision with broad latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Hire and train consultants for both online and onsite writing consultations. Provide them with feedback and ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of student needs, including the development and implementation of programs to meet identified needs and the assessment of program outcomes with a focus on continuous improvement of content and customer service.
  • Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with the GWC Assistant Director and Graduate Coordinator.
  • Facilitate workshops for graduate students. These may include special topics such as writing a research proposal, writing a literature review, academic integrity, and scientific writing.
  • Coordinate and facilitate writing initiatives (e.g. writing groups, thesis/dissertation boot camp) for graduate students.
  • Provide instructional support to graduate faculty as needed (e.g. in-class workshops).
  • Provide ongoing support to the Graduate School to meet identified needs (e.g. professional development programming, writing support for external fellowship applicants).
  • Hold one-to-one writing consultations with graduate students.
  • Stay current with writing center scholarship and best practices.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in related area required plus five years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in English, Education, TESOL, or related discipline. A minimum of two years supervisory experience in a student writing center setting in higher education. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
